Visiting Missionary Collection

Each year we hold a Visiting Missionary Appeal in all of the parishes of our diocese to support missionary efforts around the world.

Posted by Fr. Bill on June 29, 2015

The office of The Society for the Propagation of the Faith coordinates this appeal. Next weekend, July 11/12, Brother James Hamilton, a members of the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers North America, will be visiting our parish to share with us his message and stories of the ministries of the Christian Brothers.  He will be asking for our prayers and our financial blessing for their ministries.  To that end a second collection will be taken up at all the Masses that weekend for the missionary work of the Christian Brothers..

The Congregation was founded by Edmund Rice in Waterford, Ireland in 1802 for the evangelization of youth.  There are two thousand Edmund Rice Christian Brothers in 30 countries throughout the world.  There ministry is mostly involved in secondary schools and in other forms of catechesis.  In the United States, there are two hundred brothers ministering in thirty different schools and mission sites.

Brother Hamilton was originally from Rochester and was graduated from Bishop Kearney High School in Rochester in 1978, before joining the Christian Brothers.  Brother Hamilton is part of a missionary awareness team that visits parishes and schools to spread the word about Blessed Edmund Rice and the missionary efforts of the Christian Brothers throughout the world, especially in South America in the countries of Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Uruguay, and in the southern United States in the states of Florida and Texas.

Brother Hamilton is presently living and teaching at All Hallows High School, a Christian Brothers High School, located in the south Bronx, NY, just two blocks from Yankee Stadium.  I hope he gets to see a game now and then!

Please be generous in your support of the second collection next weekend for the missionary efforts of the Christian Brothers.  If you give by check please made your check payable to Good Shepherd Catholic Community, and write visiting missionary in the memo line.  There is no envelope in our envelope packets for Visiting Missionaries since we do not have enough time in advance the date of the weekend they will be with us.  So if you want to ensure that you contribution is recorded on the parish records correctly, please place your donation in an envelope and write on it Visiting Missionary, your name and envelope number and the amount of your donation.  I thank you in advance for your generosity to this special collection. The way that our Masses are scheduled Brother Hamilton will not be able to speak at all four weekend Masses.  I will be celebrating the Mass in St. Patrick, Moravia and speaking on his behalf.

I pray that you and your families have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July Weekend  as we celebrate our nations birthday.  Please note that the parish office will be closed on Monday, July 6th, in observance of the national holiday.
God bless you,

Father Bill
