The Sacrament of Penance

The Sacrament of Penance is often referred to as Confession, or as the Sacrament of Reconciliation. All three names reference an action that is done in the sacrament. We confess our sins to seek forgiveness, we do penance to show our willingness to change our patterns of behavior, and we seek to be reconciled with God and our brothers and sisters.

During the Lent / Easter season we reflect on the Paschal Mystery of Christ, His suffering, death and resurrection, and how through this mystery of our faith Jesus has forgiven our sins and has called us to be new creations in His spirit. When we sin we diminish in our lives the Light of Christ that we received in our baptism. To help us rekindle the Light of Christ in our hearts and lives we have been given the Sacrament of Penance to be renewed by the grace of God and the power of the Holy Spirit.

During the season of Lent, we are challenged to remember that the Christian life is an ongoing journey of conversion of heart. The Sacrament of Penance can assist us greatly in our journey. I encourage you and your families to celebrate this sacrament in preparation for Easter and to make it a regular practice throughout the year to seek the healing graces of this sacrament.

This year Tuesday, March 28th, has been designated in the Rochester Diocese as a Day of Penance and Mercy. The Sacrament of Penance will be offered throughout the diocese at all the churches on that day. The schedule at our four churches is as follows:

St. Michael, Union Springs, from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.,
Our Lady of the Lakes, King Ferry, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.,
St. Patrick, Moravia from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.,
St. Patrick, Aurora from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Throughout the year the Sacrament of Penance is also offered weekly at St. Patrick Moravia before the 8:30 a.m. Sunday Mass beginning at 8:00 a.m. Also, the Sacrament of Penance is offered on the First Friday of the Month before the 9:00 a.m. Mass at Our Lady of the Lakes, King Ferry, beginning at 8:00 a.m. and on the First Saturday of the month at St. Michael Church, Union Springs, from 4:00 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. On Good Friday and Holy Saturday the sacrament will be offered by appointment only. Throughout the year if the scheduled times for the Sacrament of Penance are not convenient for you please call the parish office to schedule an appointment.

The Sacrament of Penance/Reconciliation calls us to reflect on the love and mercy God offers us, and the healing and forgiveness we receive when we are contrite of heart. Once again, I strongly encourage you and your family members to receive the Sacrament of Penance as you prepare for Easter that we may celebrate more completely the new life we have received in Jesus.

Please note the changes in the weekend Mass schedule for Easter weekend. This year the Easter Vigil will be held at Our Lady of the Lake, King Ferry, on Saturday, April 15th at 8:00 p.m. There will be no Easter Sunday Mass at Our Lady of the Lake and no Saturday evening Easter Mass at St. Michael, Union Springs. The Easter Sunday Mass at St. Michael, Union Springs, will be at 10:30 a.m. on Easter Sunday, April 16th. The Easter Sunday Mass at St. Patrick, Moravia will be at 8:30a.m., and the Easter Sunday Mass at St. Patrick, Aurora will be at 9:00 a.m.

Please note as well that beginning with Easter, Sunday, April 16, the Sunday Mass at St. Patrick, Aurora will be celebrated each week at 9:00 a.m. through the fall provided we have coverage from Father Conboy or other assisting priests. Also, beginning with the Second Sunday of Easter, April 22, the Saturday Mass at St. Michael Church, Union Springs will be celebrated each week at 5:00 p.m. through the fall. As we journey together through these final weeks of Lent, let us pray for one another other that we may be touched by the healing mercy and love of God.

May Christ’s Peace abide in your hearts, Father Bill
