Memorial Day Weekend

Monday we will be celebrating Memorial Day. As we remember all those who have died in the service of our country, we pray that those who are now serving in the armed forces in areas of conflict may be protected and returned home safely to their loved ones. We also pray that future generations will live in peace and will not have to send their young people off to war. Memorial Day has become not just a day to honor those who died in service to our country but also a day on which we remember all of our departed loved ones. May they rest in peace, and may the Lord give strength to all who mourn their dead, especially those who have lost loved ones recently.

In my time as pastor I have had a tradition of celebrating Mass on Memorial Day in one of our five cemeteries in Good Shepherd Catholic Community.  This year marks my fifth Memorial Day in the Parish and the Memorial Day Mass will be held at St. Michael Cemetery, Union Springs, at 9:00 a.m.  The early time for the Mass is to hopefully avoid being in conflict with other community Memorial Day events.  We ask those attending the Mass to bring a lawn chair. Hopefully it will be good weather. In the event of rain the Mass will be celebrated in St. Michael Church, Union Springs.

Last year we applied for and received a series of grants from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester to help with larger projects in our cemeteries.  Upon physical review of each cemetery, the Cemetery Advisory Board developed and prioritized a repair and upgrade list for each sacred location. This list includes monument stone resetting, soil replacement and leveling, driveway upgrades and repair, and new cemetery fencing.  Work on these projects is progressing now that the weather is improving.

We honor our departed loved ones by keeping our cemeteries clean and park like in appearance. We try our best to care for the five cemeteries in Good Shepherd Catholic Community but the cost of operating the cemeteries increases each year. We have received permission from the diocese to take up special collections for our cemeteries during the year.   In your envelope packets you will find at different times Cemetery Care envelopes.  Funds received in these envelopes help with the maintenance cost of our cemeteries.  We thank those who have given ongoing support for the cemeteries by using your cemetery envelopes.  While these donations have helped, the increased cost of maintenance has steadily decreased the operating funds available for our cemeteries.  To address the financial need of our cemeteries the GSCC Cemetery Advisory Board is asking for your financial support.  The Letter inserted in today’s bulletin outlines how you can help.  I ask for your financial support in these endeavors as we honor our loved ones final resting places.

I wish all of you a restful and reflective day as we remember our departed loved and those who have died in the service of our country as we celebrate Memorial Day.  God bless you,  Father Bill

Novena to the Holy Spirit

is the oldest Novena in the church.  It derives from Jesus’ instructions to his disciples to go to Jerusalem and pray for the Holy Spirit..  The traditional days to pray  the Novena to the Holy Spirit  are the days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday.  The daily prayers of the Novena are available as an app for your phone at  https://catholicnovenaapp.com/novenas/holy-spirit-novena/#   Below is a Prayer for the Help of the Holy Spirit

O God, send forth your Holy Spirit into my heart that I may perceive, into my mind that I may remember, and into my soul that I may meditate. Inspire me to speak with piety, holiness, tenderness and mercy. Teach, guide and direct my thoughts and senses from beginning to end. May your grace ever help and correct me, and may I be strengthened now with wisdom from on high, for the sake of your infinite mercy. Amen.
